Introducing Adelle

Phase I: Script and storyboard

Phase II: Keyframe animation

Phase III: Pacing and finetuning animation
Timeline: 4 weeks

Skills: Animation, Timing

Tools: AfterEffects, Illustrator
This is a 1-minute animation introducing the typeface Adelle, its creators and characteristics. I developed the script, storyboard, and animation.

Process

I wrote and designed this two-page spread, exploring hierarchy, composition, the use of a grid, and typesetting. This was created in InDesign, and informed the content and narrative for the Adelle animation to follow.

I began by developing the script and storyboard. I knew Adelle needed a soundtrack and a story that unfolded in a playful and joyous way, much like the typeface.

I chose to use “Who is the Hunter, Who is the Prey?” because of its dynamic use of instruments, and high energy changes in rhythm and sounds, that resonated best with Adelle.

Once I had a rough storyboard with aural cues, I was able to flesh out the animations and transitions from one frame to the next, in an interesting way. I considered composition, contrast, and what will be interesting and hold attention, while optimizing readability.

process for “hand=crafted” keyframe animation

I considered how the viewer follows motion on the screen — too much motion across all four corners of the screen forces them to move their eyes rapidly and doesn’t hold attention. I asked myself, how can I present the information in an entertaining way while making sure the reader can actually take it in and understand it clearly?

Subtler transitions allowed me to give individual words more attention when animating. Instead of making every element enter ‘onstage’ in a complex way, I emphasized their meaning by selectively animating some of them and playing with the type characteristics.

I paid careful attention to pacing, not allowing words to linger too long or come into frame too slowly or too quickly. Doing this brought the entire video together and put the spotlight on the typeface.
